The Speaker of the Cypriot House of Representatives publicly apologized and resigned for the duration of the investigation

The speaker of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris today publicly apologized and announced his resignation. He made this decision against the background of the scandal surrounding the “golden passports”, in which his name also appeared.

“First of all, I would like to publicly apologize for the negative image of Cyprus that was created by the scandal…

I apologize for allowing some people … to harm me personally, as well as the entire institution of speakers of the House of Representatives.

At the same time, I would like to announce that starting next Monday, October 19, 2020, I will resign my position without waiting for the completion of the investigation…

I also call on all the competent authorities to expedite any legal proceedings initiated and I am ready to provide the authorities with any assistance necessary for the investigation,” Demetris Syllouris wrote in his public address to the citizens of the country.
