Fine for animal abuse in Cyprus increased to 10,000 euros

The Cypriot MPs passed a bill on the protection of animals – the new provisions of the document significantly tighten the penalties for ill-treatment of pets.

Thus, the fine for this violation increases from 1700 to 10 000 euros, and in the case of a relapse the amount is doubled. In addition, the law introduces new items that fall under the classification of animal cruelty – they are no longer allowed to be left on a tether (only for a short time in a public place in case of emergency), you can not lock them on the terraces.

Pets may be confiscated from careless owners and assigned to a ‘suitable person’ for their care.
