Cypriot president will resign if implicated in “golden passport” fraud

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades promised to resign if his involvement in corrupt schemes under the program “Citizenship for Investment” is revealed – the results of an investigation into violations in the issuance of “golden passports”, the so-called “Kalogirou report” will be made public on December 29.

The three-member Commission, headed by the head of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission Demetra Kalogirou examined documents on the issuance of passports to 12 foreign millionaires and their families. One of the cases concerns a Malaysian billionaire Law Joe, known for withdrawal of more than $ 5 billion from the state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad – it was found that he had provided false information when applying for a Cypriot citizenship.

Throughout the investigation, the Cypriot opposition has repeatedly demanded transparency in the process and the speedy release of the results. Nicos Anastasiades has recently announced that the government will submit an abridged version of the “Kalogirou report” after consulting with the competent authorities in order to comply with the legislation on the protection of personal data.

Recall that the Cyprus program “Citizenship for investment” from November 1, was scandalously closed, and the authorities have repeatedly made statements that it could not be resumed in its original form.
