A monument to the victims of COVID-19 will appear in Uruguay

In the next six months, the first monument to those killed by the pandemic will be built in Uruguay. Designed by the architectural group Gómez Platero, it is called “World Pandemic Memorial”.

The architectural structure will appear on the city promenade. In the centre of the round platform there is a hole designed through which you can look at the ocean and think. The construction of the memorial is expected to take six months.

“By creating a memorial that can activate feelings and memories in this way, we can remind our visitors what this pandemic has done and that we humans obey nature, not vice versa,” commented Martin Gómez Platero, lead architect of Gómez Platero, on the idea of the project.

It is expected that the monument will be able to accommodate up to 300 people at a time.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 789 thousand people have died of coronavirus in the world. Over 22.5 million people have been infected. Such statistics can be seen on the website of Johns Hopkins University, the data are updated in real time.
