Without the help of tourists Cypriots drank a quarter less local beer

Consumption of local beer in Cyprus in 2020 decreased significantly due to restrictive measures against the spread of coronavirus. Statisticians calculated that without the help of tourists Cypriots drank the products of domestic breweries by 23.1% less than in 2019.

From January to December 2020 the country drank 30.991 million liters of Cypriot beer – compared to 40.296 million liters during the same period last year. This slump is directly attributed to the drop in tourist traffic in Cyprus: in 2020 it was visited by more than 80% fewer tourists than the year before. The prolonged spring closing of restaurants due to the pandemic also had an impact.

Exports of Cypriot beer also declined slightly by 2.58% (1.474 million liters in 2020, compared with 1.513 million a year earlier).
