The second year of the COVID-19 pandemic may be more severe than the first, Michael Ryan, director of the World Health Organization (WHO) emergency program, said.
He emphasized that in the Northern Hemisphere, especially in Europe and North America, experts have observed a “perfect seasonal storm” – the cold encourages people to spend more time indoors and social mixing intensifies. According to Ryan, these and other factors have accelerated human-to-human transmission of the coronavirus in many countries.
The organization also warned of the dangers of new strains of coronavirus: as COVID-19 becomes more widespread, so does the risk of mutations.
