UN Secretary-General António Guterres has sent a letter of response to President Nicos Anastasiades saying no action should be taken on the area of Famagusta, Varosha, which is not in line with Security Council resolutions.
The Government of the Republic of Cyprus has been concerned about the actions of the “Government” of the occupied territory of the island, which has repeatedly expressed its desire to settle and open the enclosed part of the city of Famagusta, Varosha.
In his letter, according to the Deputy Spokesman for the Government of Cyprus Panayiotis Sentonas, the head of the UN said that he takes seriously the position of the President of Cyprus on Varosha and closely follows the developments.
“Mr. Guterres stressed that the Security Council, in its statement of 9 October 2019, reaffirmed the importance of the status quo in Varosha, as noted in previous Security Council resolutions. And said that no action should be taken against Varosha that is inconsistent with the relevant Security Council resolutions,” he said.
He added that the Secretary-General also stressed that the United Nations is guided by its Charter “and stands ready to facilitate the implementation of measures consistent with these resolutions”.
Guterres also assured Anastasiades that the UN remains ready to assist the parties in resuming negotiations on the reunification of the island.
