Last Sunday, October 11, elections were held in the north of Cyprus (TRNC) – Turkish-Cypriots were choosing a new leader for the next five years. This year 11 candidates were nominated.
The main opponents of the elections were the current leader of Turkish Cypriots Mustafa Akinci and the current Prime Minister of the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Ersin Tatar. The main struggle took place between them.
So far none of the candidates has gained 50% + 1 vote and next Sunday, October 18, the second round will be held.
Ersin Tatar scored 32.35%, Mustafa Akinci 29.84%, the third place was occupied by Tufan Erhurman with 21.68%, Kudret Ozersay with 5.74%, Erhan Arikli with 5.36% and Serdar Denktash with 4.20%.
