The Migrant Reception Centre in Cyprus is overcrowded

The emergency reception centre for illegal migrants “Pournara” in Kokkinotrimithia is currently overcrowded. This is due to the fact that due to COVID-19, all new arrivals need to be quarantined for 14 days.

At present, the influx of migrants coming from the occupied part of the island is so high that the question of additional accommodation is very urgent.

According to the Centa staff, there are now many more people waiting for the coronavirus test results than those currently living in the center.

To date, the Center has six zones where people are placed in mandatory 14-day quarantine.

Those who have received a positive test result for the virus are transferred to the EDEN rehabilitation centre in Tersefana. Thus, 11 migrants were moved there a few days ago.

According to the center workers, several sites for the construction of prefabricated houses or tent camps for newly arrived migrants have already been agreed upon. But this is not enough yet.
