The European Commission has launched investigations against Cyprus and Malta over the Golden Passport Program

The European Commission has launched an investigation against Cyprus and Malta in connection with the program – citizenship in exchange for investment. Brussels believes that the sale of popular “gold passports” is a blow to the mutual trust of EU member states in the issue of granting citizenship.

From 1 November in Cyprus will be abolished the possibility of obtaining citizenship in exchange for investment because of the scandal.

Such decision was made by the Cabinet of Ministers of Cyprus after the high-profile investigation of Al Jazeera TV channel, in which Qatari TV journalists claim that Cypriot government officials helped foreigners with criminal background to obtain Cyprus citizenship.
