King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden has admitted the failure of the national strategy to fight the coronavirus, which includes abandoning quarantine, the monarch told the SVT Nyheter TV channel.
“We have many deaths, and it’s terrible,” he said. The king noted that Swedish citizens have been hit hard by the pandemic, many have lost loved ones and have not even been able to say goodbye to them. According to the monarch, this will be a difficult and painful experience for the country.
When asked if the king himself was afraid of contracting the coronavirus, Carl XVI Gustaf said that recently the inevitability of infection is obvious.
Earlier it was reported that less than half of Swedes remained confident in the government’s chosen strategy to combat the coronavirus. The survey also recorded that 82% of the country’s population doubt that the health system will cope with the strain during the pandemic. Experts interpret this as the growth of anxious moods in the society.
Sweden was the only EU country that did not impose severe restrictions due to the spread of the coronavirus. The country’s authorities have stated that they seek to develop collective immunity in the population as soon as possible and do not want to allow the economy to suffer any damage. The country now has about 350,000 cases of coronavirus infection and more than 7,800 deaths.
