Eurostat summed up the results of 2019 on the structure of spending of residents of EU countries – in pre-coronavirus times, the main expense item for Cypriots were restaurants and hotels. They spent about 16.6% of their total spending on outdoor food and recreation – plus this is also the highest rate in the EU.
Next in the list of spending by the population of Cyprus are rent and utility bills (15.6% of expenses), transportation (15.3%), food and soft drinks (11.4%), entertainment and culture (7.3%). Cypriots spent 4.8% on alcohol and tobacco products, 4.8% on furniture, household items, dishes, small repairs, and 4.6% on clothes and shoes. 4.1% of expenses were spent on medical services and medicines, and 3% – on education.
