Second COVID-19 vaccine approved for use in the EU

Moderna, a U.S. pharmaceutical company, has received approval for its COVID-19 vaccine for use in the European Union. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said the vaccine is safe and effective and can be recommended for people over the age of 18.

“This vaccine will give us another tool to overcome the current emergency,” EMA Executive Director Emer Cook said in a statement. The decision must now be approved by EU authorities.

As a reminder, previously the only drug whose use has been approved by a pan-European regulator was a vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech. In the EU, including Cyprus, a vaccination program with this drug has already started.
