Prices for 5G frequencies in Cyprus start at 200,000 euros

Cyprus starts accepting applications for participation in the tender for coverage of the island with new generation 5G networks. Starting prices for the frequencies start at 200,000 euros, while the most expensive frequency with the best specifications is estimated at 6 million euros, StockWatch reports.

Two other attractive frequencies start at 3.5 and 2.5 million euros. It is expected that the main participants of the Cypriot telecommunications market will share the bidding lots: Cyta, Primetel, Epic and Cablenet. The licenses are valid for up to 20 years.

George Komodromos, head of the Cyprus Department of Electronic Communications, said that 5G networks are expected to start operating in Cyprus in the first half of 2021. He reminded that the 5G communication system is an evolution of the fourth generation networks developed about 10 years ago and assured that the results of studies on the impact of 5G on human health allow wide commercial use of the system. According to Komodromos, fifth-generation networks operate much faster and with minimal latency, and their application will make a significant contribution to the development of medicine, energy conservation, and environmental goals.

5G networks are already in operation in 19 of the 27 EU countries.
