Entry tickets will be cancelled at 12 museums across Cyprus to attract more visitors.
The Cabinet of Ministers on Thursday approved a proposal by the Ministry of Transport to make free entrance to 12 museums managed by the Department of Antiquities.
In preparing this proposal, the Ministry of Transport took into account UNESCO’s recommendations as well as the experience of other European countries where this policy has led to an increase in museum visitors of more than 50% over time.
This step is linked to the low number of visitors to the museums of the Department of Antiquities. In 2019, a total of 1,285,538 people visited the archaeological sites of the island and only 82,476 people visited museums.
In the near future, the following 12 museums will be free of charge: Cyprus Museum (Nicosia), Hadjigeorgiakis Cornesios Ethnological Museum (Nicosia), Museum of Traditional Embroidery and Silverware (Lefkara), Ficardo Ethnological Museum, Archaeological Museums of Larnaka, Limassol and Paphos, Curion Local Archaeological Museum (Episkopi), Marion-Arsenois Local Archaeological Museum (Polis Chrysochous), Ancient Idalion Local Archaeological Museum, Geroskipou Folk Art Museum and Cyprus Railway Museum.
