Migrants from a refugee camp attacked the Cyprus police

Yesterday, 1 September, migrants from a refugee tent camp in Κοκκινοτριμιθια attacked Cypriot police officers.

This happened after the police tried to detain a man from the camp who was there illegally. This provoked such outrage among the refugees that the local security service was forced to call for additional reinforcements.

Eight instigators have been detained by the police and are due to be brought before a court in Nicosia today.
The camp in Κοκκινοτριμιθια is open to temporary migrants for the first 72 hours after their arrival in the Republic of Cyprus.

The centre has both a tent camp and prefabricated houses for temporary accommodation. Up to 700 people can stay there at any one time. Residents of the centre have repeatedly protested against poor conditions and various restrictions.
