Cyprus took part in a worldwide study of changes in the habits of the population under the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic – it was found, among other things, that increased stress levels resulted in a sharp increase in tobacco consumption.
It is reported that before the pandemic, the average Cypriot smoker smoked about 10 cigarettes a day, and during the first, spring lockdown in the country, that number doubled to a whole pack.
A total of 9,565 people from 78 countries took part in the study, and the trends that emerged were similar everywhere.
In addition, 29.5% of respondents complained about decreasing family income, and 7.5% said they could not afford the essentials. This caused people additional anxiety and stress.
“Anxiety and depression are important factors in mental health, which is severely challenged in isolation,” the researchers said.
