LG transparent displays make first public appearance

On 3 April 2020, LG Display announced the first public use of its transparent OLED displays. The South Korean television company MBC installed such a screen in one of its studios to display the results of voting in elections for the country’s National Assembly (Parliament). A new generation of transparent organic LED displays, which LG Display is developing, allow viewers to see what is behind these panels even when turned on. Transparent OLED displays first appeared in 2019, but this year the product was presented to the general public. Transparent OLED panels can be used for shop windows and office premises. They can be placed next to each other to build video walls for presentations and advertising. The company’s transparent OLED displays are 55 inches in size, with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a transparency rate of 40%. The latter figure, according to LG Display, is a record, as previous commercially available liquid crystal screens had only 10% transparency.
