High technology and business incubators in Cyprus

The Government of Cyprus is not weakening in its efforts to turn Cyprus into a regional research centre. Public policy pursuing this goal includes various initiatives concentrated in three areas, namely:

1. The opening of research centres, which is an essential condition for the production of knowledge and innovative ideas. In this context, institutes such as the Cyprus International Institute for Environmental and Public Health have already been opened – in collaboration with the Harvard School of Public Health and the Cyprus Research and Education Foundation (Cyprus Institute). The government is also considering proposals by Cypriot researchers to establish centres in various scientific fields in Cyprus, as well as conducting bilateral agreements for the development and support of R&D.

2. The creation of new enterprises in the field of high technology and innovation, which would increase the potential for creating products with high added value due to the intellectual component and know-how, and the demand for these products would be determined by its high quality and innovative characteristics, rather than price. Four business incubators are designed to facilitate the creation of such enterprises.

3. The creation of a science and technology park in Cyprus, which would constitute the infrastructure core for the development of research, and would also become a platform for hosting research centres, business incubators and spin-off innovative enterprises. The science and technology park is an indispensable infrastructure element for achieving the government’s goals in the field of R&D.
