For the first time, the WTO will be led by a woman

For the first time in the history of the World Trade Organization, it will be headed by a woman.

Two candidates are currently running for the post: Yoo Myung Hee, South Korea’s Commerce Minister and Nigeria’s Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

“Both women who made it to the final round are highly qualified. Everybody agrees with that. They impressed us from the very beginning. These are people with a lot of experience in dealing with such complex issues,” Keith Rockwell, spokesman for the organization, commented on the choice.

From 2013 until August 31, 2020 the WTO was headed by Brazilian diplomat Roberto Azevedo. But due to family circumstances, he left his post a year earlier than he should have.
