Cyprus will prohibit the sale of non-environmental plastic bags

The Cypriot government has decided to ban the sale of single-use plastic bags. This is the next step in the fight against environmental pollution from biodegradable garbage.

The campaign to phase out the non-ecological plastic packaging in the country has been going on for quite a long time. For example, until July 1, 2018, plastic bags in Cypriot stores and supermarkets were distributed for free – and from that date, the authorities obliged sellers to charge for them (on average, about 6 euro cents per piece). Over time, Cypriots appreciated the convenience of reusable shopping bags, and stores and catering switched to paper packaging – the use of bags was reduced by 80%. Now, apparently, it’s time to abandon them altogether.

The document will come into force after the parliament approves it.
