On Friday, Cypriot motorcyclists organized a protest after authorities issued a decree restricting the use of certain types of motorcycles to reduce noise levels.
As the decree was met with an angry reaction from the bikers, some amendments have already been made to the decree. But the Cyprus Motorcycle Federation considers any restrictive measures unacceptable and demands the complete abolition of the document.
Head of the Road Administration Yiannis Georgiou commented on the decision to impose restrictions on the movement of motorcyclists and referred to the experience of Belgium, France and England, where such decrees apply. He stressed that visitors of street verandas experience difficulties in communication, as they cannot hear anything because of the deafening sound of passing motorcycles.
At the moment, motorcycles and quad bikes over 125 cc have restrictions on movement from 1:00 to 4:00 am on certain days on certain roads.
Motorcyclists who violate the decree may be fined by the police. Rental motorcycles and motorcycles of couriers are exempted from the document.
