A 35-year-old Cypriot lawyer was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison by a Nicosia court – a man found guilty of the death of an eight-year-old girl in a car accident.
The accident occurred in April 2017 on Lemesu Avenue in Nicosia. The car in which the girl was driving was driven by her mother; there were also two teenagers in the car, one of whom was the schoolgirl’s brother. The lawyer’s car drove into the oncoming lane and there was a collision, as a result of which the child died. As it turned out later, the man was drunk – the concentration of alcohol in his blood was five times higher than the norm.
The lawyer was charged with six counts, including reckless conduct resulting in the death of a child, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a seat belt, and refusing to obey a police officer’s signals. The court ordered him to spend 18 months in jail for the fatal accident.
