According to the Cyprus Medical Service, the average age of covid patients in the island’s hospitals has fallen considerably.
Cyprus Mail quotes Limassol pulmonologist Haris Armeftis: the doctor states that at Limassol Central Hospital the average age of those hospitalised with coronavirus is now around 54 years. “Last week we put a 47-year-old policeman on a ventilator. Yesterday, a 46-year-old woman without any other illness was intubated. This is worrying,” said Armeftis.
The younger generation of the coronavirus may be due in part to the fact that Cyprus has already vaccinated its older population and in part to the fact that the current “British” strain COVID-19 tends to affect the young. The plus side of the situation is that younger patients, even if their condition requires hospitalisation, are more likely to survive the disease and its consequences.
