The Cypriot government will allocate 4 million euros for a three-year programme of cycling as a means of transport, Transport Minister Yannis Karoussos told at a press conference. The money will be used, among other things, to build more bicycle lanes, reprogramme traffic lights and ensure that bicycles are free on public transport.
The authorities also intend to provide funds for the purchase, maintenance and repair of bicycles for rental agencies and to offer residents attractive rental rates for electric bikes. A route map will be created in an app format and a special website will be created, where all information on the use of bicycles in Cyprus will be collected. Public sector workers will be expected to ride two wheels to work (with an opportunity to shower and change clothes), and 100 electric bikes will be bought at public expense, on which the public servants will be moved.
The programme will run from 2021 to 2023. “In Cyprus, with its short distances and Mediterranean climate, the bicycle can be an alternative way to get to where you need to go, and not just a means of exercise and entertainment,” says the minister.
