Against the backdrop of worsening relations with Turkey, Greece announced the beginning of military exercises near the island of Castelorizo.
The conflict was provoked by the Turkish side, sending to the Greek island of Kastelorizo, for exploration of deposits research vessel Oruc Reis. The pretext was a “seismological study” in the region. The work began on July 21 and will continue until August 2.
Greek authorities have officially stated that they are not ready to tolerate the actions of a neighbor, as the exploration of the fields is held in the exclusive economic zone of Greece.
Now the two countries are arguing over which of them is entitled to explore the shelf near Kastelorizo.
Both Greece and Turkey are NATO member states, but the leading members of the alliance do not interfere in the situation, and the European Union has so far limited its political statements.
The armed forces of both countries are now on high alert.
