Around 400 cases of domestic violence in Cyprus have been reported during the three months of quarantine (May, April, March). This figure was made public by the Minister of Labour Zeta Emilianidou.
“These are incidents involving children, women, elderly people, including parents who have been abused … A total of 391 calls were received by the social service with complaints of domestic violence,” said the Minister.
She also said that during the quarantine social services were is in constant contact with the police to ensure protection for victims of domestic violence. Specialists also provided support by telephone if the situation allowed and were in constant contact with the Association for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (SPAVO).
In addition, the Minister stressed that there is now a project – “Women’s Home”, which will function as a temporary shelter for women victims of domestic violence.
