In 2024, as part of the program “Artemis” NASA plans to send to the moon two astronauts – a man and a woman. This will be the first woman ever to land on an Earth satellite. It is assumed that they will live in an inhabited module, which is designed by Blue Origin, Dynetics and SpaceX.
Realizing that the astronauts will face a lot of domestic difficulties, the aerospace agency has decided to announce a competition for the most successful solutions that will help make life more comfortable for astronauts.
Lunar Loo Challenge, it is a competition by NASA m and HeroX to develop a space toilet for the program “Artemis”. It will be installed on the landing module, which will be able to descend from orbit on its own, and thus must work both in zero gravity and on the Moon, where the force of gravity is about six times weaker than the Earth. In addition, it must cope with different types of waste, withstand on average 6 uses per day and be easy to clean. NASA also has technical requirements – the weight of the object is not more than 15 kilograms (on Earth), power consumption is less than 70 watts per day.
The competition is open to everyone from any country in the world, age also does not matter. The creator of the most successful solution will receive $35,000.
For reference: “Artemis” is NASA’s program to bring people back to the moon. American private companies and the European Space Agency from Japan will take part in this project. One of the goals of the program is to send to the Moon “the first woman and the next man” (referring to the fact that the men were there).
The main objective of the project is to create a permanently inhabited settlement on the Moon, which will be the first step in the exploration of Mars.
