Only a third of refugees arrived in Cyprus legally this year

From January to October this year 5 840 migrants were registered in Cyprus, according to the profile service. Of these, only 2,090 people arrived in the country legally and then applied for political asylum. Another 3750 migrants (almost two-thirds of the total) came to the territory of Cyprus illegally – arrived on boats smugglers or crossed the “Green Line”.

Most of the migrants came from Syria, Lebanon, Georgia, India and Bangladesh. Currently, the relevant authorities are reviewing 16,955 applications from 18,825 people, including children.

Since the beginning of the year, 1,200 migrants – mostly from Georgia – have voluntarily agreed to be repatriated.
