The information and communications sector was the only industry in Cyprus that benefited from the COVID-19 pandemic – it, unlike others, showed an annual increase in turnover, according to Statistics Cyprus.
In the third quarter of 2020, 5.3 percent year-on-year growth in the information and communications industry was due to increased demand for distance learning and home working at the height of the pandemic. But the accommodation and catering sector, which was particularly affected by bans on entry for tourists and other measures to curb the spread of coronavirus, in the reporting period fell by 56.1% compared to July-September 2019.
In the period from January to September 2020, an annual growth of 2.8% was recorded in the field of information and communications, while activities in the field of accommodation and catering fell by 58.1%.
