The U.S. State Department again called on Turkey to immediately cease its activities in the exclusive economic zone of the Republic of Cyprus, calling these actions provocative and exacerbating tensions in the region.
“We call on the Turkish authorities to stop these operations,” the U.S. State Department spokesman said.
Turkish drilling ship Yavuz has been in the Exclusive Economic Zone (ΕΕΖ) of Cyprus since April last year. This is the sixth time Turkey has attempted to drill within the Republic’s EEZ and continental shelf, this time in an area that covers part of exploration blocks 6 and 7, for the development of which two companies – ENI and Total – have already received licenses.
