Yesterday, October 6, the Office of the Secretary General of the United Nations published a written statement of the Secretary-General on Varosha. We publish his verbatim text below:
“The Secretary General is concerned about today’s announcement of the opening of the beach and coast of Varosha. He recalls that the UN position on Varosha remains unchanged and is guided by relevant Security Council resolutions.
The Secretary General stresses the need to avoid unilateral actions that could cause tensions on the island and undermine the resumption of dialogue or the future success of negotiations. He calls on all parties to engage in dialogue to resolve their differences and reaffirms his willingness to bring the parties together”.
This statement of the UN Secretary General is associated with the fact that the day before the Prime Minister of the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Ersin Tatar, reported that from October 8, the beaches of the Varosha suburb of Famagusta, which has been empty since 1974, will be opened. Turkish President Recep Erdogan supported this decision. According to media reports, TRSK plans to open for free access about 1.5 km of ghost town beaches.
