A 49-year-old truck driver was killed by a six-metre-high metal pole to the head that flew out of a pickup truck driving on the opposite side. The tragedy took place on Thursday, August 27, in Kato Polemidia, a district of Limassol.
A representative of the Limassol highway police said that it was now being investigated whether the death was due to the negligence of another driver.
According to preliminary reports, metal poles were tied up. However, the circumstances of the accident are still being clarified.
The dead, a 49-year-old Bulgarian citizen, drove off with a passenger in his truck at about 11 a.m. towards the industrial zone of Agios Sylas (Limassol). A pickup truck driven by a 55-year-old man drove along the opposite lane.
When the pickup was level with the truck, six metres of metal poles flew out of the car and one went through an open window and hit the man on the head.
The policeman added that the 49-year-old victim had a passenger in the truck, but he could not make any statement as he was still in shock.
At the moment, the 55-year-old pickup driver has been arrested.
When asked whether the transport of such poles in the back of the pickup was permitted, the police officer confirmed that it was prohibited.
