The European Commission requires Hungary to open its borders, as this violates the integrity of the Schengen area.
Hungary banned foreigners from entering the country from September 1 because of the threat of COVID-19 proliferation. This is the first country in the European Union to reopen its borders.
Hungarian nationals will have to undergo a two-week quarantine or two negative coronavirus tests upon return from abroad.
“Today [European Commissioner for Justice and Rule of Law] Didier Reynders and I write to the Government of Hungary reminding you of the importance of the integrity of the Schengen area and of applying border measures in a non-discriminatory manner to all EU citizens and residents. Any measures that do not comply with these fundamental principles of Union law should certainly be immediately revoked” the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, wrote on Twitter.
At the moment, citizens of Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, who have booked tours in advance, will be able to enter Hungary. This was reported by Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó.
In order to get to Hungary, they will need a negative result of the test for COVID-19, received at least 5 days before the trip.
There are 6.2 thousand registered COVID-19 infections in Hungary. 616 people were killed by the pandemic.
