The Danish authorities came to the forced decision to destroy the entire population of burrows in the country – animals can be carriers of the mutated coronavirus and pass it on to humans. This was reported to the Danish media by the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Mette Frederiksen.
Currently, the mutated virus was detected in 12 people. Its peculiarity is the weakened ability to form antibodies. This may cause problems when using the vaccine against COVID-19. Thus, minks, in which the virus was found, may become a real threat in the fight against the spread of infection.
According to Frederiksen, the decision to destroy all the minks in Denmark was not easy, but the risk of spreading the mutated virus across the country and beyond is too high. “This is a rainy day for me and for everyone working in this industry,” the prime minister said, adding that coronavirus infection in animals has already been detected on 207 farms.
The armed forces and the Danish Emergency Response Agency will assist farmers in destroying sinks.
