On Sunday, the world’s number one player Novak Djokovic returned to Serbia after almost two months of quarantine in Spanish Marbella.
He could not even imagine that trip with his family to visit his younger brother Mark would take so long.
“Unlike many other players, I could train almost every day, because we lived in a house with a tennis court,” Djokovic told a press conference at his private tennis complex in downtown Belgrade. The sportsman emphasized that thanks to this he is now in excellent shape.
Djokovic confirmed that at the tournament, which is to be held from June 13 to July 5 in his homeland, there will be three famous names in addition to him: “I am glad that Dominik Tim, Grigor Dimitrov and Alexander Zverev will be my guests here in my hometown,” said the 17-time world champion.
“We would very much like fans to be able to attend this event, but it is still not clear whether it will be possible because we have to follow all the rules of the Serbian government in connection with the Coronavirus”.
The first stage of the tournament will take place on June 13 and 14 in Belgrade, at the “Djokovic complex” on the hard court, while the second stage will take place at the Croatian coastal resort of Zadar on June 20 and 21.
All four tournaments will be attended by eight players, who will compete in two pools of four on a circular system. The winners of each pool will reach the final and a total of 13 matches will be played over two days in each stage.
When asked whether Novak planned to invite his long-time rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to the event, he said: “Frankly speaking, it didn’t occur to me to invite Federer because… he’s still treating a knee injury. And I have no problem calling Nadal, but I don’t think he’s coming.”
