Taxi drivers in Cyprus are on strike today

Taxi drivers are on strike in Cyprus today – a nationwide strike by drivers began at seven in the morning. They are unhappy with fuel prices, as well as the authorities’ plans to change the taxi scheme at airports, CNA reports.

The taxi drivers are demanding a cut in diesel and petrol prices and the cancellation of planned innovations at the Pafos and Larnaca airports. Taxis there are now divided into short-haul and long-haul groups – and the changes mean that drivers will be given number plates and will pick up customers wherever they are going, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Taxi drivers’ unions find it offensive that the authorities are ignoring the industry’s problems – this is not the first strike by drivers in an attempt to draw attention to the issues. The event was announced in advance and is taking place peacefully.
