Russia fully supports mandatory UN Security Council resolutions that provide for the return of Famagusta, Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Stanislav Osadchiy said at a meeting with a delegation from the Municipality of Famagusta headed by Mayor Simos Ioanna.
The meeting took place in the context of a series of contacts that the municipality supports. The Russian Ambassador expressed his country’s support for the resumption of negotiations on Cyprus in order to achieve a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.
The Mayor of Famagusta handed over to Osadchiy a copy of the letter on the situation in the Turkish occupied city of Famagusta sent to the UN Secretary General. He also asked for Russian intervention to implement the UN resolutions on Famagusta.
It should be reminded that on October 8 Turkish side illegally opened a part of beach of abandoned city of Famagusta in violation of numerous UN resolutions.
Varosha, fenced off part of the occupied Famagusta by Turkey, is often described as a “ghost town”. Resolution 550 (1984) of the UN Security Council considers unacceptable any attempt to populate any part of Varosha with people who are not its residents, and calls for the transfer of this territory to the UN. Resolution 789 (1992) of the UN Security Council also called for the expansion of the territory currently under the control of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus to include Varosha.
