The Ministry of Education is studying the possibility of postponing the beginning of the new school year.
Education Minister Prodromos Prodromou told media today that the final decision to open the schools on September 7 will be made within a few hours today.
He referred to the fact that the Ministry received a request-proposal from an initiative group of parents of schoolchildren to review the timing of the beginning of the new school year because of the high temperatures in Cyprus in the last week.
“I am sure that schoolchildren should wear protective masks. It is true that high temperatures are now established, but there are no recommendations to suspend the work of the schools. We will consider this proposal of parents and make a decision in the coming hours. I must stress that the Ministry of Education is discussing how the schools can cope with the high temperatures”.
The Minister of Education, speaking about the readiness of schools to open, said that all of them will be ready by Sunday evening, and explained that the schools must be ready by Monday, regardless of the decision to suspend.
