In ten years (from 2010 to 2020) in Cyprus, 420 minors escaped from orphanages or their own homes. These statistics were provided by the Minister of Justice, Emili Yioliti.
The minister also reported that of the 420 to 376 minors “escaped” from orphanages and 44 from their own homes.
In addition, she noted that 18 minors – from Somalia, Syria, Congo, Mali, Cameroon and Guinea – are still on the run.
Most of the escapes happened in 2019, and their number was 135.
According to statistics: 12 children left shelters and homes in 2010, six in 2011, six in 2012, 21 in 2013, five in 2014, 17 in 2015, 37 in 2016, 26 in 2017, 101 in 2018, 135 in 2019. In the first eight months of 2020, 54 escapes were recorded.
Emili Yioliti also specified that the time interval from the time of disappearance to the detection of fugitives has always been different. On average, children were away from home for several hours to a maximum of three to four days.
