This is one of the main holidays in Cyprus and the official state holiday. On this day usually all government offices, banks, schools, many stores and pharmacies are closed.
In 1960, Cyprus received full sovereignty from Britain. But Britain has retained two independent military bases on the island – Akrotiri and Decelia.
Usually, on this important day, the capital of Cyprus holds a military parade, which is always attended by high-ranking state officials.
Traditionally, it begins at 11 am local time. By this time every year, locals gather in Nicosia.
But this year, due to restrictions associated with COVID-19, the parade to celebrate the 60th anniversary of independence of Cyprus was held without a spectator.
