“Greece will extend its western territorial waters from six to 12 nautical miles”, the Greek Prime Minister said.
Mitsotakis during a debate with legislators on whether to approve a maritime boundary agreement between Greece and Italy.
The two countries signed the maritime boundary agreement back in June. They established an exclusive economic zone and resolved long-standing issues regarding fishing rights in the Ionian Sea.
A separate maritime agreement with Egypt, which Turkey claims violates its continental shelf, is also under discussion in the Greek Parliament and legislators are expected to vote on both agreements on Thursday.
Mitsotakis said that Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias plans to visit Tirana to discuss the maritime agreement with Albania.
It will not affect the Aegean Sea region off the eastern and southern coasts of Greece.
So far there is no decision on the disputed territories with Turkey, which said that if Greece starts to expand eastwards, it may be a reason for war.
The two countries have long argued over the length of their continental shelves and their maritime boundaries, and the disputes have intensified since Turkey sent a research vessel into the disputed waters of the eastern Mediterranean this month.
U.S. President Donald Trump called Mitsotakis Thursday to discuss recent developments in the eastern Mediterranean, according to an official statement by the prime minister.
Mitsotakis told Trump that Greece is ready to contain tensions in the region until Turkey stops its provocations.
