About 80 people went out Tuesday night to protest at the French Embassy in Nicosia, chanting slogans for the glory of Allah and his Prophet Mohammed.
Four young men (20, 21, 24 and 31) were arrested by police for hooliganism, in particular for removing the flagpole and destroying the French flag. They were charged with conspiracy to commit a criminal offence and violation of laws on racism and xenophobia. A 28-year-old man was also arrested for assaulting an officer.
The protest was the result of a fierce confrontation between French President Emmanuel Macron and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Thousands of Muslims protested in different countries, destroying French flags and pictures of Macron.
