The Environmental Protection Authority of the Republic of Cyprus demanded that the municipality of Peyia immediately demolish part of the footpath laid directly above the sea caves, which are Natura 2000 protected area.
This area is also the place where Mediterranean monk seals have been breeding for many consecutive years. This species of marine animals is now in danger of extinction.
The construction of a pedestrian walkway in this area is a direct and flagrant violation of environmental directives and European Union laws. In addition, the walkway is built of natural materials, particularly concrete and metal pipes. And this has a negative and direct impact on the protected area.
The letter, which was sent to Peyia Municipality, noted that the demolition should be carried out in such a way as not to harm rare and protected animals living in this region.
The dismantling should also be carried out in the presence of a representative of the Environmental Department.
