The Cypriot Ministry of Health has announced a tentative schedule for vaccinating citizens against the COVID-19 coronavirus.
Patients/residents and employees (more than 6,000 in total) of nursing homes and medical centers for the chronically ill will be vaccinated first, as early as January of the coming year. At the same time, 1,000 health care workers in infectious disease units, intensive care units, and emergency rooms will be vaccinated.
Vaccination of people over 80 years will begin in January – it is expected to finish during the first quarter.
From January to March it is planned to vaccinate Cypriots over 75 years (about 27.5 thousand people), in the first half of the year people 16+ at risk of serious diseases will be vaccinated.
The main goal of the campaign, as the ministry noted, is to vaccinate more than 40% of the population in the first half of the year, in the name of reducing mortality and normalizing the burden on the health care system.
