Republic of Cyprus authorities announced on Sunday that they detected three new coronavirus cases after carrying out 1252 tests, including 389 samples taken from people who were repatriated Saturday and Sunday.
According to the latest information relayed Sunday afternoon by the state’s Epidemiological Unit, three new coronavirus cases were detected in 389 samples taken from people who were repatriated over the weekend. Test results from one traveler were included in Saturday’s report.
Earlier statements said no new cases were found, but later Sunday afternoon an associate lab said it detected three COVID-19 positive cases from 58 additional samples
But two people who tested positive on Sunday were passengers on a flight from the UK that landed at Larnaca International Airport a day earlier, according to local media. Another person, described as a flight crew member, was on a flight from Athens that also arrived on Saturday.
The Cyprus News Agency reported Sunday no new cases based on a first batch of test results from 1194 samples, including 331 passengers.
But later in the afternoon, a second report by Greek Cypriot officials said additional 58 samples from Saturday were tested by an associate laboratory, detecting three COVID-19 positive cases. Health ministry officials said the process to trace and track down close contacts had also been initiated.
Based on the latest information, the total number of laboratory tests concluded on Sunday rose to 1252, with the total number of positive cases in the Republic of Cyprus increasing to 983 according to an official statement.
Turkish Cypriot officials said no new cases were detected in the north over the weekend.
