Early on Friday morning, September 4, a boat with 52 migrants from Syria and Lebanon moored in the port of Larnaca. It was carrying 28 men, eight women and 16 children. After testing for COVID-19, all were sent to a refugee tent camp in Κοκκινοτριμιθια.
When registering, the refugees told the Migration Service staff that each of them had paid 1000 USD for a place in the boat.
Three days earlier UN peacekeepers had brought 21 migrants to Cyprus. Their boat ran aground off the coast of the buffer zone. This happened after the Cyprus Maritime Police prevented them from boarding in Paralimni.
According to official data, only last week 98 refugees came to the island.
