A mother who left three children unattended can get support instead of punishment

A Limassol resident who is accused of leaving three young children unattended may receive state support instead of punishment. The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Emili Yioliti, joined the mother of many children.

Last weekend, a police officer saw a seven-year-old girl walking in a city park without an adult escort. He took the child to the police station, the law enforcement officers began to find out who her relatives were and where she lived, and went out to her grandparents and through them found out the child’s address. Two more children were found unseen – a 13-year-old boy and a girl of 1.5 years old.
Their mother was found and detained by night – a 35-year-old foreigner explained that she had to leave the children alone to go to work.

Emili Yioliti decided to intervene and assured that the government would help her mother with many children. “No mother would just go to work, leaving her children alone at home – only in despair and because of great need. I contacted the mother of the children. The state must intervene to provide support. And it will do it,” the official tweeted.

So far, the children’s mother had gone through preliminary court hearings in Limassol and was released on a no-show subscription. Her passport was confiscated and she was required to check in at the police station three times a week – otherwise she would have to pay 20,000 euros.
