A large flock of dolphins was seen off the coast of Limassol by the Fisheries Department last Tuesday. Photos taken by them on Friday, the department published on their website.
Judging by the photo, the flock has about 30 adults of large dolphins – alphaline.
“In Cyprus, a playful and friendly alphaline is often found,” the publication says. “However, flocks with as many animals as this one are an unusual phenomenon that cannot go unnoticed”.
Alphaline is a large dolphin, one of the 3 species of the genus alphaline; besides it, Australian alphaline and Indian alphaline belong to the same genus. It reaches a length of 2.3 to 3 meters, rarely – 3.6 meters. Their weight varies from 150 to three hundred kg. The length of males is about 15-20 cm longer than the length of females.
