Citizens gather outside the Presidential Palace in Nicosia on Friday November 6 to express dissatisfaction with the government’s actions regarding the recent “gold passport” scandal and to demand that officials take responsibility for the crisis.
Demonstrators are calling for the removal of any officials responsible for creating a negative image of Cyprus abroad in connection with the “shameful” citizenship program for investment.
The demand includes the removal of former chairman of the Supreme Court of Cyprus Myron Nicolatos from his post as chairman of the investigative committee due to a conflict of interest. His daughter works for a law firm that processes applications for “citizenship for investment. Nicolatos had previously stated that he would withdraw from these particular cases. The protesters also resent the role of Attorney General George Savvides and his deputy Savvas Angelides in the passport scandal – both as ministers participated in Cabinet meetings last year when foreign investors’ citizenship applications were approved.
